Runslea - Houses built
Year 1948
In 1948 four council houses were built in Lower Belchalwell, no doubt as part of the drive for more housing after World War 2. The long field between the road to Sturminster and the trackway down to the original Belleaze Farm was known as 'The Run', hence the name Runslea
Though there are no records of previous buildings on the site, finds from the gardens would seem to indicate otherwise. At No. 2, the remains of a packed flint surface lies under the front garden adjoining the road, and a 16th century coin came from the same area. Many pottery sherds have been collected, and in the main date from the 16th - 18th centuries. A small number, however, date from the 11th - 14th century, perhaps indicating an even earlier, pre-plague dwelling.Source: Property records |
