Year 1852
One hundred years ago from our files of 1852. (Western Gazette's predecessor, The Western Flying Post?)
'On Wednesday last, a fire, attended with a great loss of property, broke out on the premises of Mr Rose, Belchalwell. A salute of firearms was given in honour of a wedding party, who had adjourned to Mr Rose's beer-house, and some ignited wadding fell on the thatched roof. The fire extended to four cottages on the opposite side of the road, which were reduced to ruins.'Source: Violet Lodder, c.1970 |
